Inner City Restrictions For Lorries
It looks like things are going to get a little hard to lorry drivers to make their deliveries as the Prime Minister has asked Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin to look at bringing in some restrictions for HGV in inner city areas.
David Cameron is looking to improve road safety, particularly for cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
Some of the suggestions to improve road safety, included outright bans for lorries during peak times, staggered light phasing at junctions, improved enforcement of mandatory safety features for trucks operating in city centres, and other improvements to the existing roads and junctions to make them safer for people riding bikes.
The Freight Transport Association have suggested this would likely result in increased traffic during peak times, with a lorry being replaced by a number of smaller vans. They put forward a number of alternative ways to help improve overall safety. They also highlighted that HGV related fatalities had halved over the last 12 years, illustrating the success that had already been achieved in road safety.
Let see what happens next.
